Trip to Alloway

We have NTS membership so we decided spend a couple of days over in Ayrshire to see Burns and Culzean. So on Thursday we headed west ward in the rain to visit Alloway. We arrived at lunchtime and after lunch we had a wander round the musuem. A great museum only spoilt by the noise of some of the other visitors. We then headed out in the rain to see Burns Cottage – on our way there I worked out that it had been 35 years since my last visit back in the summer of 1976. The cottage didn’t disappoint – I think due to the weather not many people had ventured up to the cottage. We then headed down to Alloway Kirk to have a look round the graveyard. Robert Burn’s father is buried there and it was Burn’s inspiration for Tam O’Shanter. We enjoyed rading the stones going round the church. We also visited the Burns monument – climbing to the top, luckly not as many as the Wallace Monument – and the Brig O’Doon.
